Historic AL-77 Coosa River Bridge
Location: Southside/Rainbow City (Etowah County)
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in cooperation with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) are conducting environmental studies for the bridge replacement on AL-77 over the Coosa River in Etowah County, Alabama. The bridge, which is located between the towns of Rainbow City and Southside is a one-lane historic truss bridge with limited lane width and narrow shoulders. ALDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge with a new bridge that will have two 12- foot lanes, and minimum 6-foot shoulders. The new bridge would be built higher than the existing bridge. Alternatives as well as traffic control for the bridge replacement are under consideration. Right of way will be required.
The bridge (Bridge Inventory Number 2035), which was constructed in 1939 by C.G. Kershaw Contracting Company, is eligible for listing to the National Register of Historic Places.
