Bryce Historic Cemetery & Woolsey Finnell Bridge Section 106 Consultation
Location: Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa County)
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in cooperation with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) are updating environmental studies for the proposed additional lanes, access management, and bicycle/pedestrian improvements along McFarland Boulevard/US-82 from Rose Boulevard in Northport to east of Jug Factory Road in Tuscaloosa.
In conjunction with improvements to McFarland Blvd, is a proposal to replace the Historic Woolsey Finnell Bridge over the Black Warrior River. Cultural Resource Studies located burials associated with the Historic Bryce Cemetery within existing ALDOT right-of-way in the vicinity of the McFarland Boulevard and Jack Warner Parkway intersection. Currently, construction activities are underway to remove the burials. The burials will then be reinterred in Bryce Cemetery 1A, located across Jack Warner Parkway on the University of Alabama (UA) campus. All work is being conducted in consultation with FHWA, Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH), and UA Office of Archaeological Research (OAR).
