What is the
Rural Transit program?

The purpose of the Section 5311 program is to support public transportation for people living in any area outside of an urbanized area as designated by the Bureau of the Census.

A rural area is defined as “an area encompassing a population of less than fifty thousand people that has not been designated in the most recent decennial census as an ʻurbanized areaʼ by the secretary of Commerce”.
